Promoting Well Being With Yoga in Abergavenny and Crickhowell

Yoga can help with your overall health and well-being in many ways. We all associate Yoga with better flexibility, but that is just the tip of the iceberg with what this wonderful practice can do for you. It is also effective at increasing your overall strength, building your core strength, encouraging more effective breathing and respiration, and improving your posture and balance. These physical benefits are impressive, but Yoga has also been shown in studies to help relieve stress and anxiety, provide the participant with more mental and physical resilience, and encourages more body and mind awareness.  I cannot think of any activity that will give the participant all that yoga offers. If you would like to discuss your individual needs or questions, please contact me through the contact page on this website.

YOGA

As popular as Yoga is now, it is good to recognise that it has been practiced for nearly 5000 years to promote fitness of body and mind. Yoga would not have that kind of staying power unless it worked! Did you know that nearly all stretches and exercises used in Physiotherapy have their origins in Yoga?  Besides the wonderful physical benefits Yoga offers, it also teaches our minds to be more calm and less frenetic. Yoga heightens our awareness and enjoyment of the present moment and teaches us to transcend the tensions and anxieties. Though you do not have to meditate in order to do Yoga, the physical practice of Yoga is the perfect doorway to learning to meditate too.

Meditation

There is nothing mysterious about meditation and anyone can learn to do it.  Meditation is actually natural for us, and you have probably done it before and just not called it that!  If you have ever been completely absorbed in something you are doing – perhaps writing, painting or drawing, listening to music you like – you have experienced some of what meditation is. To be successful usually requires overcoming obstacles such as mind chatter, stress or anxiety, or even just a busy-ness in the mind. Once you learn to calm your learned restlessness, meditation is usually effortless or easy.

It is now widely recognised that practicing meditation has wonderful benefits for both physical and emotional  health.  I periodically offer a Meditation class, but can help you get started with a one to one session if there is not a class on the go. The techniques used are simple and easy to learn and you can feel the effects immediately. You will, of course, improve with practice just like with anything new you learn to do.
